Hip Hop Jewellery in India: Custom Gold, Silver & Lab-Grown Diamond Pieces, Celebrity Style
Walk into any music video shoot in Mumbai or Delhi today and you'll see it: heavy Cuban link chains, iced-out pendants with the artist's name, tennis chains stacked two and three deep. Hip hop jewellery in India has gone from something people imported from New York to something Indian rappers, streetwear brands and regular fans want made here, with their own story in the design.
I've been building jewellery in CAD for over twelve years, a lot of it for clients in the USA and Canada who wanted exactly this kind of bold, statement piece. So this post is a behind-the-bench look at how custom hip hop and celebrity-style jewellery is actually made in gold, silver, natural diamond and lab-grown diamond, and what you should ask before you order one.
What makes a piece "hip hop jewellery"?
It isn't one style. It's an attitude: big, personal and meant to be seen. The pieces people ask us for most are:
- Cuban link chains – thick, tightly interlocking links, plain or fully iced with stones on every link.
- Tennis chains and bracelets – a continuous line of round stones, usually 3–6 mm each.
- Custom name and logo pendants – your name, your crew's logo, your label, or your city, cut out and pavé-set.
- Iced-out rings – signet-style or championship-style rings with initials and a full stone face.
- Pendants with a picture – a portrait or album art, either enamelled or engraved inside a stone frame.
What ties them together is that most great pieces are made to order. That's where a jewellery house that designs in-house makes all the difference.
Choosing your metal: gold, silver or both
Gold (10K, 14K, 18K and 22K)
Gold is the classic choice for chains and pendants that will be worn every day for years. In India most people think in 22K, and it's gorgeous, but it's soft. For a heavy Cuban link or a stone-set pendant I usually recommend 14K or 18K, because the alloy holds prongs and clasps far better. Yellow gold is the signature hip hop look; white gold makes stones look even whiter; rose gold stands out on stage lights.
Always ask for BIS hallmarked gold with a HUID number. In India that's your proof of purity and it's the law for most gold jewellery sold here.
925 sterling silver
Silver is the smart starting point if you want a big look without a big bill. A solid 925 silver Cuban chain with rhodium or gold plating looks the part and lets you go chunky on size. It's also how many artists prototype a design before committing to gold.
Gold vermeil
This is thick gold plating over sterling silver. It gives the colour of gold at a silver price, but it will need re-plating over time if it's worn hard.
Stones: natural diamond, lab-grown diamond or moissanite?
| Stone | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Natural diamond | Mined diamond | Heirloom pieces and buyers who want the traditional choice |
| Lab-grown diamond | Real diamond, grown in a lab | Fully iced chains and pendants where you need hundreds of stones |
| Moissanite | Silicon carbide, a different mineral | Budget iced-out looks with lots of fire |
| Cubic zirconia | Simulant | Fashion pieces and stage props |
For hip hop pieces, lab-grown diamonds changed the game. A fully iced Cuban link can hold several hundred small stones. In natural diamond that's a serious investment; in lab-grown diamond it becomes realistic for a lot more people, and it's still genuine diamond that tests as diamond. India, and Surat in particular, is one of the world's biggest growers and cutters, so stones are sourced close to where we make the jewellery.
One honest note: whatever stone you pick, ask for it in writing. A good jeweller tells you exactly what's in your piece.
How a custom hip hop piece is made (step by step)
- Your idea. A sketch on paper, a screenshot, a logo file or even a voice note. We talk about size, weight, budget and how you'll wear it.
- CAD design. I model the piece in 3D (Rhino, ZBrush, MatrixGold) down to each stone seat and link joint. This is where we lock thickness so the chain doesn't kink and the pendant doesn't flip backwards.
- Photo-real renders. You see your jewellery from every angle before any metal is used. Changes are made here, where they're cheap.
- 3D printing and casting. The approved design is printed in castable resin and cast in your chosen gold or silver.
- Setting. Stones are set by hand under a microscope: pavé, micro-pavé, prong or channel. On an iced piece, this is the step that takes the most hours.
- Finishing and QC. Polish, plating if needed, clasp testing and a final check of every stone before it ships.
What separates a great hip hop jeweller from an average one
- They design in-house. If they can only resell catalogue pieces, you can't truly customise.
- They show you renders first. Never pay in full for a custom piece you haven't seen in 3D.
- They talk about weight honestly. A hollow chain looks big for less money but dents easily. A solid chain costs more and lasts. Both are fine if you know which you're getting.
- They care about the back of the piece. Smooth galleries, rounded edges, and a bail big enough for your chain. Cheap pieces cut corners on the side you don't see.
- They certify stones and hallmark metal. BIS hallmark for gold, IGI or GIA reports for larger diamonds.
Celebrity-style jewellery without the celebrity price
You've seen the chains on stage and in reels. The good news is that the look isn't locked behind a record deal. A few ways to get it within budget:
- Pick lab-grown diamonds for fully iced pieces and keep natural diamonds for a single centre stone.
- Start in 925 silver with heavy gold plating, then remake in solid gold later from the same CAD file.
- Go for a semi-hollow pendant with a solid front. It looks full and heavy from the front but uses less gold.
- Choose 14K over 18K for big chains. You save on gold and gain strength.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a custom name or logo pendant in India?
Yes. Send us your name, logo or artwork and we'll build it in CAD, share renders for approval, then cast it in gold or silver and set it with lab-grown or natural diamonds.
Is lab-grown diamond good for iced-out chains?
It's one of the best choices. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds with the same hardness and sparkle, and they make fully iced chains and pendants far more affordable than mined stones.
Which gold karat is best for a Cuban link chain?
14K or 18K. It's strong enough to hold its shape and clasp under daily wear. 22K looks rich but is soft and can stretch or dent on heavy links.
How long does a custom hip hop piece take?
It depends on size and stone count. A simple pendant is quicker; a fully iced chain with hundreds of hand-set stones takes longer. We give you a timeline once the design is approved.
Do you ship outside India?
Yes. We regularly design and make jewellery for clients in the USA, Canada, the UK and Europe.
