Everyday care
Fine jewellery does not need complicated maintenance, but it does benefit from good habits. Put your jewellery on after perfume, lotion, hairspray and other beauty products have dried. At the end of the day, give each piece a quick wipe with a soft, clean cloth before you store it.
Take it off for the hard-working moments
We recommend removing jewellery before the gym, gardening, heavy lifting, cleaning, cooking with messy ingredients, or any activity where a piece can be knocked, pulled or pressed against a hard surface. Rings and bracelets take most of the impact during daily use, so a few minutes of care can prevent unnecessary scratches and loose settings.
Keep it away from water and chemicals
- Swimming: Chlorinated pools and salt water can be harsh on metals, finishes and settings. Cold water can also make fingers temporarily smaller, which makes rings easier to lose.
- Bathing: Soap, shampoo and conditioner leave a film that can dull the surface of jewellery and collect around stones.
- Household cleaning: Bleach, strong detergents and cleaning sprays can affect metal finishes and delicate details.
- Perfume and skincare: Apply these first, allow them to settle, then put your jewellery on.
Protect the setting
Stone-set jewellery should be checked from time to time, especially pieces worn often. If a stone begins to move, a claw looks lifted, or the piece catches on clothing more than usual, stop wearing it until it has been inspected. Continuing to wear a loose setting can turn a small repair into a lost stone.
Store each piece separately
Jewellery lasts better when it is not rubbing against other jewellery. Keep pieces in a soft pouch, lined box or separate compartment. Chains should be fastened before storage to reduce tangling, and stone-set pieces should be kept away from softer surfaces that can scratch.
Cleaning at home
For routine cleaning, start gently. Use lukewarm water, a small amount of mild soap and a very soft brush. Work carefully around the back of stones and small settings where everyday residue collects. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Avoid abrasive powders, rough cloths and strong chemical cleaners. We also do not recommend ultrasonic or steam cleaning unless you know the materials and stone settings in your piece are suitable for it.
Plated, enamelled and delicate pieces
Plated finishes, enamel, pearls and other delicate materials need lighter handling. Do not soak them for long periods or scrub them. A soft dry or barely damp cloth is usually the safest choice. If you are unsure, contact Jewelzit before using a cleaning product.
When to have your jewellery checked
Pieces worn every day deserve an occasional professional inspection. There is no single schedule that fits every item, but rings, bracelets and heavily stone-set jewellery should be checked whenever you notice movement, snagging, unusual wear or a change in how the piece feels.
A simple rule to remember
Jewellery should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off. Store it dry, keep it away from harsh chemicals, and do not wear it through activities that put unnecessary pressure on the piece. Small habits like these make the biggest difference over time.
